Who doesn’t need a little taste of Bavaria in their life, especially when it comes in the form of a Franconian Apple Strudel. That is one of Dagmar Ratensperger’s specialties which she whips up at her cozy little spot in Old Saybrook, Connecticut called Dagmar’s Desserts and Cafe.

Dagmar Ratensperger used to shuttle tirelessly between her shop,Dagmar's Desserts, in Deep River and local farmers' markets. I was first able to buy her superb German, Swiss and Austrian pastries at the Saturday morning Stonington market. Now, she and her team are comfortably located in the spot that once housed the late, lamented Bruewhiler's Bakery (home of unforgettable gruyere scones) at the foot of Main Street in Old Saybrook.

If you're going to indulge in a sweet treat, make it count with a luscious slice of a linzer torte, a melt-in-you-mouth birnen (pear) brownie, an oh-so-appetizing piece of apfel-rahm-kutchen (apple custard cake) or maybe a sumptuous serving of cranberry-caramel-almond tart.

You'll find these exquisite pastries and cakes and much more at Dagmar's Desserts and Café in Old Saybrook, the only authentic Bavarian/Austrian bakery in the region.
